Its tucked in the belly of the plaza and the interior is so nostalgic of old school sushi restaurants completed with a sushi bar. The fish is light and fresh and sides were standard but its everything you expect out of a proper sushi spot. And good combos for student friendly prices.

My boyfriend and I were in Sacramento for the afternoon, and we were looking for a place to grab dinner on the way home. I found Zen Toro on Yelp and it's located in downtown Davis. Since it's in a college town the prices are quite affordable for a sushi restaurant. They were busy for a Saturday night, and we were seated at the bar. We were told that there would be about a half hour wait for our food, but at least they gave us a fair warning. We got an order of their takoyaki for $8 appetizer, and I got a Deep Fried Zentoro Roll $12 which has salmon, cream cheese, avocado, UMS (eel sauce, spicy mayo, sriracha), and jalapeno. The roll was delicious, but the sauce and jalapeno were a bit too spicy for me, so I ended up scraping it off, but the roll itself was good. My boyfriend ordered two different rolls and he was happy with his food. Love the low prices. We'll try to come back the next time we're in Davis.

Their food is pretty good in general. A little bit of inconsistencies. Check out my live action review of me, trying their food. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRwx87WX/

I came to check out Zen Toro, as it came highly recommended as a spot to go toe to toe with Mikuni. The service was attentive and did a good job. Servers were not over the top, but made sure I was taken care of. The agedashi tofu appetizer was probably pre made and wasn't great. Sauce was nice but the texture of the tofu was off. From the Sushi bar I ordered the 49er and the Torched Davis. Both were overall pretty good. Fish was fresh and tasted right. Some of the proportions of fish to rice were a bit off, and I found myself chewing on some undercooked sushi rice at times, but not a bad job whatsoever. Ambiance of the place was nice. Calming music and not a lot of commotion. At the end of the day, I saved $20 on dinner going here over Mikuni, but I would not say Zen Toro beats out their rivals over at Mikuni. This is quality food for the price.

I can't lie, I'm a little embarrassed that I have been in Davis this long and never tried such a wonderful restaurant. But it's okay, mistakes have been made, what matters is that now I've been, I'll be coming back. Zen Toro has a small, cozy interior dining space, complete with a sushi bar, endless super cool decorations, and an impressive variety of high quality Japanese food - sushi, udon, rice plates, you name it they have it. Sushi is expensive in general, but Zen Toro's prices are very reasonable, especially compared to some of the other sushi options in Davis. And they don't sacrifice quality at all, it was absolutely on the higher end of sushi I have had in the area. My friend and I split three rolls, and I was particularly impressed by the Tuna Lover's Roll, though absolutely all of them were delicious. The waiters seated us quickly, and were incredibly sweet, bringing our food in a super timely manner. I cannot wait to come back to try their udon and other dishes, they have definitely quickly risen to one of my favorite dinner locations in Davis!

I went to Zen Toro on Friday afternoon. I had a sushi craving around 2:30pm but the AYCE sushi places in Davis is closed in the afternoon (i.e I love Sushi is closed between 2:30-4:30pm, Juscos does not open until 5:15pm). Luckily, Zen Toro was open and not super busy!! Zen Toro is a bit hidden away down stairs/ramp and there is not too much natural lighting. Even though the ambiance might lack, the food and price point makes up for it. Service: We were seated right away. The staff is very friendly, but not the most attentive (needed to flag down a couple of times, and did not refill water unless prompted). We also got up to bring our card to them since they did not pick up our cards after dropping off the check. Food: My partner and I opted for 1 lunch special and 4 rolls (definitely filling for two hungry people). For the lunch special, we got the rice and roll combo ($15) which included a choice of entree (chicken teriyaki), choice of 4pc of a basic roll (crunch roll), rice, salad, miso soup, and two pieces gyoza. The chicken was delicious and there was a good amount of teriyaki sauce which paired well with the amount of rice. The salad did not have dressing, so be sure to ask for some if you want dressing. For rolls, we got 2 raw and 2 non-raw. For the raw, we got the aggies roll (12) and the ocean roll (13). The aggies roll was the cheapest and our favorite among all the rolls - definitely a must have if you like your sushi with cream cheese. The ocean roll was also delicious and had lots of fish! For non-raw we got the caterpillar (13) and dragon (13). I definitely recommend the caterpillar if you like avocado but there was less fish in this one overall. The dragon roll was delicious, but definitely for unagi lovers. Overall, we had a great time and will be back. For the 1 lunch combo and 4 rolls our total with tax came out to about $72 which is a tad under what we were going to pay for AYCE at I love Sushi.

I can't believe I've never been to this sushi spot until now! The ambiance feels like I'm on a romantic date because of the low lighting :) The sushi tasted really fresh (I always order sides of lemon to squeeze on my sushi too) but I really enjoyed this sushi restaurant. They had an appetizer that tasted like a lion king roll minus the rice and I'm all for it!! I would come back just for that appetizer! Such a great dish that I never knew I needed and that more sushi spots should have!! Now I'm always going to crave it when dining in for sushi.

Somewhat hidden in the middle of downtown Davis, but contains very fresh fish. The menu is extensive, but there's also combo deals. The sashimi is really good and large pieces as well. Salmon bake roll is also delicious. Awesome service as well, water cups were always filled. Vibrant environment, good for small and big groups.
